SUITS BYO PC LAN
Ben on Sep 25th 2008
Hello Everyone,
You may have heard about the SUITS BYO PC LAN that we are running this Saturday (the 27th of September). If not I recommend you head straight to this form and fill it in (on the day priority entry will be entitled to those who have registered or payed). Before you come to the LAN on Saturday there is a bit of house keeping I need to run through. I need you to read through this so we can have the smoothest running LAN possible.
The LAN will start at 10am and will be finishing off around 9pm as we need to be packed up and cleaned up by 10pm. Anyone who is willing to help with the setup and cleanup can email me (ben@suits.org.au) this will be going on from about 8am. From 10am we will have someone waiting at basement level B2 to let people in. You can drive straight up to this elevator through the university carpark on sheppard street. Please unload your computers here then bring them up to the boardroom. Parking is up to you, as far as I know there is parking in the University Carpark (which is expensive) or parking on sheppard street. Please do not illegally park and please do not try and drop your computer off at the School of IT main entrance. If you happen to live close and are walking here with your computer you may enter through the main entrance. There will be signs up with phonenumbers you can call in case doors are locked.
The entry fee will be $10 for access and $20 for non-access. You may pay this on the day or beforehand. Those who have payed will be top priority, followed by those who have filled in the registration form, finally followed by those who have not done either. If you have not filled in the registration form then we may deny entry until 11am as those who have registered are higher priority. We will have a cap of around 30 computers on the day due to power restrictions. However this event will still be enjoyable for spectators as there will be console games set up for your use. The price includes food and drink for the day (cans of drink and two meals).
Make sure you have installed all the necessary patches etc. for games you wish to play on the day. We will have a file server running with all the files we think you might need, but in case we have not got the correct patches for the games you want, make sure you do this beforehand. If you are wondering about what games you should have for the day, the most popular games (from my experience) are typically Warcraft III, Call of Duty 4 and Counter-Strike (both 1.6 and Source). Other games that people have expressed interest in are Starcraft, Age of Empires 2, Battlefields 1942/2/2142, Team Fortress 2 and Unreal Tournament 2004. A special reminder, if you have games that require an online client to work properly (example: Steam) you will need to make sure you have all the necessary patches and files to run in Offline Mode (make sure you check this before coming). We will not have an internet connection at the LAN.
What you need to bring:
- Computer
- Monitor
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Power cables
- Headphones
What you WILL NOT bring:
- LAN Cable
- Speakers
- Power Boards
- Viruses/Spyware/Trojans/Keyloggers/Hacking Tools/Malicious Code or Scripts
- Pirated Material
- Alcohol/Illicit Drugs
- Anything Illegal
We will be supplying LAN Cables as people tend to forget them, lose them or have them accidentally permananently borrowed same goes for power boards. Speakers are also not to be brought along as they annoy everyone around you. Make sure you have some headphones before this event. We do not want anyone spreading viruses etc on our network, so please update your Anti-Virus software, update your Operating System and make sure you run a full scan before attending. Anyone who spreads a virus or has a virus detected on their computer while at the event will be kicked out without a refund. The same goes for Pirated Material, we will not tolerate any form of piracy at our LAN. Similarly any form of hacking or malicious intrusion will result in removal from the venue and no refund. Alcohol and Illicit drugs are not allowed by University policy (not to mention illicit drugs being illegal). Any other form of illegal activity will be treated strictly, we will remove you from our event and report you to the police.
By attending this LAN you agree that any form of damage to your computer or peripherals, be it software or hardware damage is completely your own fault and responsibility. We will not be providing hardware or software support (excluding a minor amount of network assistance) if you have a broken computer it is not our job to fix it. You are also responsible for all personal belongings you bring to this event, if anything is stolen or lost it is not our responsibility. However we do not encourage or endorse any sort of stealing. If anyone is caught doing this they will be removed from the event and reported to the police. We also have the right at our discretion to remove anyone from the event at any time due to unruly behaviour or any other cause we might have.
Now to end on a high note, we really hope this event will be a lot of fun. A serious amount of planning, thought and money has gone in to this event and we hope to repeat it in the future. If everyone abides by the rules we have laid out I know this will be a great day. All our previous gaming oriented events have been very successful and we hope that this event can be just as great. I can’t wait to see you all there and I hope this day can be the highlight of your mid-semester break.
Thank you all and see you on Saturday,
- Ben
