School of IT Resources

Here you’ll find technical resources for using computers. The kind of content on this page focuses more on setting up your computer environment to work nicely so you can get on with whatever work you have to do. Of course, setting up your environment can be a learning experience, and involve quite interesting challenges in it’s own right.
You’re free to use the resources here for anything you like. It’s a good idea however, to make sure you understand what’s going on with anything you take from this page.
SIT Unix Environment
SUITS provides a set of configuration files and software that makes using Unix on the school computers a lot more useful, easy and enjoyable.
Best of all, it’s easy to set up, and safe. All your old configuration is backed up and can be restored if you wish.
If you’re on a Windows machine, open PuTTY, connect to congo1.ug.it.usyd.edu.au with your username and password. If you’re on a Unix machine, run
ssh userXXXX@congo1.ug.it.usyd.edu.au
Once you’re logged in to congo1, run this command, and make sure you read all the instructions carefully! Seriously, it’s important!
~suits/pub/setup.sh
What you get:
- You login automatically goes to the Linux congos, rather than the older and slower Solaris mono server.
- Lots of annoying little things fixed, eg delete, arrow keys, backspace, etc all work properly.
- WindowMaker 0.92.0
- Bash 3.2.33 (with custom patch for optional vi readline mode)
- SSH 4.7p1
- TexLive 2007
- URxvt 9.02
- Firefox 2.0.0.12
- CMake 2.4.8
- Gnuplot 4.2.2
- Screen 4.0.2
SIT Support Page
Visit this URL for info written by the SIT network administrators. Unfortunately it’s only accessible from inside the Uni. http://www.it.usyd.edu.au/~support
Printing
The print queues are not cleared (on windows). So if you can’t print to one computer, use another computer or printer. Use start->setting->printer and faxes.
Free Software Mirror
If you’re inside the university network, check out our mirror. Linux distributions, and other bits of free software are available there. Mirror Requests are welcome.

If you’re looking for an internal mirror of the Debian & Ubuntu Linux repositories (not the ISO images), the UCC maintains an up to date mirror here:
